1.2 Million Reasons for the IRD

Some
argue that Protestant Mainline churches are nothing but sinking ships.
That the influence of churches like the Episcopal, United Methodist,
and Presbyterian Church (USA) on American culture has waned to complete
irrelevancy. That no one cares what they have to say or thinks they are
important in a national debate.

I can think of 1.2 million reasons for saying that these arguments are wrong.

The
San Francisco-based Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund has committed $1.2
million to LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgendered) advocacy

This coming year should be exciting and event filled
for American and for The United Methodist Church. Our Council of
Bishops was meeting last week, during the election, and reacted with
excitement to Barack Obama's victory, some of the bishops event
shouting Obama's slogan: "Yes we can!"

Meanwhile the
new boards of directors for our United Methodist Church lobby office on
Capitol Hill and for our missions agency both met last month. The Board
of Church and Society is already making plans for its promotion of

The
senior U.S. senator from the Empire State has added his voice to a
growing chorus of Democratic lawmakers seeking to bring back the policy
ironically referred to as the "Fairness Doctrine."

During
an Election Day interview on Fox News, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-New
York) took a jab at critics of the Fairness Doctrine, and suggested
radio stations should be required to be "fair and balanced."

 

"The very same people who don't want the Fairness Doctrine want the FCC

LOS
ANGELES - Homosexuals and their supporters in California are vowing to
fight the passage of a state constitutional amendment that defines
marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Even
as the last votes were being counted, the American Civil Liberties
Union and other opponents of Proposition 8 filed a challenge with the
state Supreme Court. They contended that it cannot be used to undermine
one group's access to rights enjoyed by other citizens. (Read earlier

The
city attorneys in Los Angeles and San Francisco also filed a request
with the Supreme Court to invalidate the amendment's approval, arguing
